Do I have to order every month?
We hope you will! But there's no requirement to place an order every month. You can place an order every month, every other month, or just order whenever the whim (or the need for delicious fresh seafood) strikes you.
How long will flash frozen, vacuum packed seafood stay "fresh" in my freezer?
Any of the vacuum packed seafood we deliver will stay fresh in your freezer for up to one year so you don't have to worry about gobbling it all up before you place your next order.
Why does flash freezing make seafood taste better?
It's the combination of flash freezing which keeps the integrity of the flesh of the fish at time of freezing AND vacuum packing which halts the seafood's exposure to oxygen. That combination preserves the freshness and flavor of our seafood until you’re ready to prepare it for your family.

Do you ship your packages to other cities?
Packages shipped within Washington state and most of Oregon state are shipped overnight via UPS. Packages to other destinations are shipped via Fed Ex using Standard Overnight 'Perishable' Service.
All product is packaged using plenty of gel packs and an insulated cooler - this packaging combination will ensure your fish fillets arrive frozen and in excellent condition.
Shipping costs vary based on weight of package and final destination. We love Surfin Seafood and would like to tell all of our friends about it. Do you offer an incentive for referrals?
We sure do! Referrals are greatly responsible for our quick growth so we want you to know how much we appreciate them. We'll put an extra piece of fish in your next order if our new customer mentions your name when signing up for our service.
How do your prices compare with what I'd expect to pay at a grocery store?
Our prices are in line with high quality grocery stores. And we think you'll agree our quality is second to none.
What kinds of seafood do you provide?
We offer the highest quality, sustainable seafood in season. Our monthly selections include at least 5 different varieties of seafood including salmon; halibut; a bottom fish such as Pacific Rockfish, Sole, Cod, Tilapia; an exotic fish such as Mahi-Mahi, Albacore Tuna, Blue Marlin; and a shellfish such as Prawns, Scallops, or Dungeness Crabmeat. Substitutions are welcome.
Can I make a substitution if I don't like something offered in the package?
Absolutely! Substitutions are welcome. You can substitute any type of seafood offered in any of the packages that month. For example, if you don't like Albacore Tuna, you could substitute more salmon, Dungeness crabmeat or any other items offered in any of the three packages.
Please note that not all substitutions are created equal. Substitutions are calculated based on value of seafood not piece count. For example, if you request "no tuna, add crabmeat", you will receive the amount of crabmeat that has the same value as the tuna.
Please feel free to email us if you'd like to find out what the "trade value" of a specific substitution would be.
How do you assure quality?
We are as close to the source as can be. Vacuum packing seals in the freshness. Our seafood is vacuum packed immediately after the fish is caught, guaranteeing unparalleled freshness and flavor.
How do I know if seafood is really fresh?
With seafood, you want to test both texture and smell. With texture, you are looking for firmness. With smell, you want your seafood to smell like the sea but not fishy.
I've read newspaper stories about our oceans being fished out. Is your seafood ecologically sustainable?
Our supplier has a keen focus on purchasing seafood from sustainable fisheries that help protect our ocean fisheries. We consult a variety of sources to ensure that the seafood we offer is the most sustainable choice. Sources include: Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood WATCH, The Blue Ocean Institute's Guide to Ocean Friendly Seafood, eartheasy Sustainable Seafood Guide, Environmental Defense Fund, Seafood Selector. Bottom line -- each and every one of us can do our part by altering what we consume, helping our oceans by eating a variety of seafood.

I've heard that farmed seafood can be bad for the environment. Is your seafood from fish farms?
Our seafood is not from "fish farms". The only farmed fish we offer is fish where the sustainable, earth-friendly method of harvest is farming, i.e., tilapia, catfish, trout and prawns. To promote both the health of our customers and the health of our environment, we purchase only all-natural, wild fish from our suppliers . . . nothing farmed, nothing fake.

Where do your prawns come from? We're worried about them coming from the mangroves in Asia.
Our Gulf White Prawns are farmed shrimp spawned, grown and processed under the highest standards of sustainable agriculture. From the pristine waters of Sea of Cortez, off Mexico’s west coast, this frozen shrimp is grown with strict environmentally responsible controls, and is never exposed to chemical, antibiotics or additives.

What about high mercury levels in fish? Should I be worried?
Mercury is prevalent in certain seafoods but not all, so eating a variety of different types of fish (like the ones we provide!) will protect you from any undue exposure.
If you have specific concerns, please consult your doctor or search on-line for recommendations.
How can I pay for my seafood?
Payments must be made prior to or at time of seafood delivery. We offer two methods of payment. You can pay on-line using a credit card. Or, you can pay COD, either by sending a check to us in advance to: P.O. Box 77222, Seattle, WA 98177, OR by leaving a check out for us on the day of delivery.
Please note that if you send us a check in advance, we will not deposit it until your delivery has been made.

Do I need to be home at the time of delivery?
No, in fact most of our customers are not home when we deliver. We deliver the seafood to you in a 24-quart cooler with 4 ice packs. The seafood leaves the shop frozen at negative 20 degrees so it will stay rock-solid frozen for up to 10 hours.
What if a little bit of the fish is soft by the time I got home to empty out the cooler?
Because all of the air is sucked out during the vacuum-packing process, the quality of the fish is protected by the seal. A little softening is just fine, just stick it in your freezer as soon as you can.
How'd you come up with the name, 'Surfin' Seafood?'
Well, that's where family comes in. The name was dreamed up by 7-year-old Dillon, who had great fun imagining surfing seafood being delivered door to door! We hope you'll enjoy our seafood as much as Dillon enjoyed dreaming up the name. And we hope you'll keep "surfing" up to our web site to browse our selections and place your order!
I took a piece of fish out of the freezer on Monday with the intention of cooking it Monday night. It's Friday now, is the fish still good?
If the fish has not been removed from the vacuum-packed bag, it should be fine. To be on the safe side, however, when you cut open the bag, wash off the fish and smell it. It should smell like the sea, not fishy. The flesh should be on the firmer, rather than mushier side.
Why did you start Surfin' Seafood?
We're in Seattle, one of the seafood capitals of the world. You want steaks delivered to your home, try Omaha. You want seafood, Seattle's the place. We wanted to make high-quality, fresh seafood available conveniently and inexpensively throughout the area.
How should I thaw my seafood for preparation?
The goal is to keep your seafood continuously cold. So, seafood is best thawed slowly in the refrigerator. Fillets, steaks and shellfish will generally thaw out overnight or in a day. If you need a quicker option, run the vacuum-packed seafood under cold running water or immerse the vacuum-packed seafood in a bowl of cold water and keep in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours per pound of seafood. For an even quicker option, take the vacuum-packing off your seafood and defrost in the microwave on low power (30 percent) for 15 - 30 seconds.
How do I know what kinds of fish I've received?
We label each freezer pack of fish so that it’s easy for you to tell at a glance what kind of tasty seafood it is. That’s particularly handy when you want to pull a package or two out of the freezer for dinner.
We also indicate the exact items in each package on the newsletter that accompanies your delivery so you can make sure you received exactly what you were supposed to!
How long will your seafood stay "fresh" in my freezer?
Our vacuum-packed seafood will stay fresh in your freezer for up to one year so you don't have to worry about eating it all before you place your next order. We vacuum pack and flash freeze our seafood in special freezer-quality plastic that protects it from oxygen and freezer burn until you’re ready to thaw and prepare it.
How much space will a delivery of seafood take up in my freezer?
We package our seafood in vacuum packs of approximately one pound each. Vacuum packing makes our seafood packages pretty flat, so you can easily stack them on a shelf in your freezer and still have plenty of room for all your other necessities. And our piece size of 3/4 - 1 pound (just the right amount for a family meal) means that you can easily defrost what you need for dinner with no fuss or hassle. A Mini Pack will contain between 8.5 and 10 pounds of seafood, divided into 8 to 10 vacuum packs (usually 2 each of 4 to 5 different types of seafood). A Grilling or Family Pack will contain between 9.5 and 11 pounds of seafood, and a Seafood Lover Pack will contain between 10 and 11.5 pounds.
What should I do with the cooler?
Hold on to that cooler and the ice packs that came with it. When you’re ready to order again, just leave your cooler with ice packs out for us and we’ll replace it with a fresh, filled one. If you’re no longer able to order again (for instance, if you’re moving out of our delivery area) just let us know, and we’ll pick up your cooler on our next delivery day in your neighborhood and return your $20 deposit.
I ordered a Mini Pack, which advertised 23 to 25 portions. But there are only 8 packages of fish in my cooler. Did you forget part of my order?
No, we didn’t forget… and once you start eating you’ll find that all the fish we promised is there! We don’t package our seafood in single portions. Instead, we prepare vacuum packs that each include 3/4 - one pound of fresh fish. We do that for two reasons. First, we’ve found the 3/4 - one-pound pack is the ideal size for most of our customers: it’s a full meal for a family with two adults and two kids, or for three adults, or for two adults with some wonderful leftovers for the next day. And, second, we prefer the 3/4 - one-pound size because it’s perfect for preparation: a one-pound salmon fillet, for instance, is small enough to be manageable on the grill, but large enough to retain its moisture and tenderness as it cooks
What if I have leftovers? Do I throw them out?
NO! You won't want to miss a morsel of our wonderful seafood! Eat your leftovers cold or warm them up for up to four days after cooking.
I ordered the Seafood Lover’s Package. But it doesn’t seem like that much more fish than one of your smaller packages. Isn’t this supposed to be the “big” package?
We dubbed our biggest order the Seafood Lover because, although it’s not all that much bigger in quantity than our other packages, it is much bigger in flavor! The Seafood Lover focuses on exotic, higher-priced types of seafood that the gourmet in you will love. So, for example, you’ll get ling cod rather than true cod; high-priced but absolutely divine crab meat; and exclusive seasonal offerings such as first-of-the-spring King salmon. If you’re trying to feed a herd of kids, you may do better with one of our other packages. But if you’re an adventurous chef eager to explore the finest the oceans have to offer, our Seafood Lover is the package for you!
